1.  Place truck upside on an anvil leaving room for drawbar and coupler to drop.

2.  Place an awl in the center of the rivet and tap with a hammer until the coupler and drawbar are free of the truck.

3.  Install the new spring and drawbar assembly and support the end of the drawbar on the anvil and use a center punch to secure the stud again.  Just flare it enough to keep in from coming out of the truck.

Repro studs are available if the original is too mangled to reuse.

The correct URL for Olsen's Library would be useful here. http://pictures.olsenstoy.com/searchcd1.htm

They appear to only have the parts list for this locomotive: http://pictures.olsenstoy.com/623.htm

A bit more information on this locomotive appears in the Greenberg's Repair and Operating Manual For Lionel Trains, 1945-1969.

Try looking in the Olsen Toy website (www.olsentoy.com).  They have a library section that has many exploded diagrams that I have found helpful in working on some of my postwar items.

Good luck.

Hello, How do I go about replacing the front coupler centering spring on a  1949 623 switcher? It is pretty much mangles. Any help will be appreciated. Bossman
