Lionel 8111 Switcher??

Just got an 8111 today to find it has no E-unit. Only has the lever on top that switches it from forward to reverse. It has a nice pullmor motor and pulls a good load. Does anyone know what part number E-unit I could use to put in it or if I should use an electronic one if there is one for it that will work.

The next step up from the manual reverse is a mechanical two-position e-unit. This will provide transformer control for forward and reverse. Next is a mechanical 3-position e-unit, adding the neutral position for more flexibility. Then, as you point out, an electronic e-unit.

I had the same 8111 and picked up a new two position e-unit from Eastwood parts at a Montvale show, about 20.00. It required some fitting to replace the manual lever since the lever slot is so close to the side of the locomotive for clearance. With some trial and error, it operates satisfactorily. And you're right about the motor; it's a smooth operator!

If I had to do it again though, I'd go for an electronic 3-position unit. Good Luck!

Dallee has some nice electronic E-Units that will do the job for AC or DC motors, should do the trick.

 

You could also look on eBay for the correct E-Unit for that locomotive, it was an option, but only a 2-speed.

MPC Lionel made a lot of these switchers with a 2 position reverse. It's an easy do.

Yeah, Thanks everyone.

 Jeff at train tender has the e-unit listed for $17.50. I think that will be the plan. looks like something even I can do.

 Took it apart tonight and gave it a good motor cleaning and lub job with a new set of traction tires. Much inproved! Could not go wrong for engine and ten cars for $84.00 with the shipping. Two of the cars are postwar and the rest are 70s and 80s.
