I picked up a few Lionel PW and MPC steamers ( 2020, 2056, 8206 ) at an auction as a lot bid for $50. They all are in good condition and run great except for the Postwar 2056. The steamer runs great in reverse but is irratic and slugish in forward. Is this a strip down and clean the PulMor motor or is it a sign of a worn out 60 year old motor ?

sounds like you need to check the brushesclean and oil the loco should be good to go

It's a TOY, A child's PLAYTHING!!! (Woody from Toy Story)
It sounds more like an erratic E unit. I would clean and lube the motor, replace brushes, and clean the E unit. I would also make sure that the fingers on E unit are making good contact.
Another winter project when the snow starts piling up.
