The problems been around since MPC started using the plastic armature in the 1970s. They can be pulled out without breaking if you are careful and work slowly. A gentle bend/arch will usually solve the knuckle opening problem. If all else fails, like they said just tie it shut.

Thanks Sir James,
I am up for any suggestions and glad to know that this is not something that only I have going on.

I have found that by gently raising the plastic armatures out and switching them around that in some cases it solves the problem. Another thing you can do is again, gently, bend up the ends and that makes them a little tighter in the knuckle.
Thanks Guys!!!
Good to know I am not the only guy that has this problem. I found some small black ty-wraps and they seem to work too. They are black so you can't see them unless you are looking.
Thanks again,
Kevin
If you know anybody who has braces on their teeth, the little rubber bands work well. I have a big supply left over from mine so I'm all set for a long time
I use black twist-ties.

Small rubber band around the coupler shank.
I have a few automatic log cars that the operating couplers release on if I am pulling too heavy of a load. The cars are flat cars that I have attached loads to like come with the post war 6361 log cars. None of my post war cars ever let loose.
They all have plastic trucks with steel wheels.
Cars are numbers 16600 IC, Can’t find a listing for this one, 16604 NYC made in 1987 and two 9300 PC made in 1970-75 and 1977 not sure which was made when.
I also have the same issue with a 1992 LRRC GP-38 Diesel Engine 6-18818 that is new in the box and the first time I got it out it to would release for no good reason.
Anyone have a quick fix for this other than two-part epoxy?
Thanks,
