I need a definitive answer on Virginian boxcar colors
Posted by Deputy on Sunday, September 4, 2011 9:57 AM

I have established that the correct colors for Virginian locos are black and yellow with gold lettering. I have finally located a correct color Virginian caboose (red with white lettering) from Weaver. Lionel made a nice set of scale black coal hoppers (6-17140), and I'll eventually be able to afford them. Now about the boxcars...were there ANY blue and yellow boxcars or are all those also fantasy colors? The HO boxcars I see are all primer red.
So is ANY of this blue & yellow stuff prototypical or are they all from Lionel Fantasyland?

These folks are probably the definitive source. I suggest e-mailing them. I have found that most of these groups are really helpful.

Nothing is more fairly distributed than common sense: no one thinks he needs more of it than he already has.

Cool! Some excellent books available from them. Thanks for the heads-upYes. I did find a picture of a Weaver Ultra Line scale Virginian boxcar and it was in the regular boxcar primer red color. Unfortunately I didn't get the number of it. All the electrified locos I have seen in authentic photos were black and yellow. No blue and yellow. More and more I think the blue and yellow was just other toy train companies copying Lionel.

Well I blew the wad and bought the 6-car hopper set by Lionel (6-17140). At least they are scale size and the correct colors. I am also tracking a correct color Virginian boxcar that was made for the Lionel FM Trainmaster Demo set. So Lionel actually DOES know what color boxcar is correct for the Virginian, they just prefer to make them in the fantasy blue-yellow colors. Weird. Tongue Tied

WOW! Excellent links! I wondered about the Virginian passenger cars. I knew they were pullman heavyweights, but never saw a color pic of them.

Here's a pic of the coal hoppers I bought:

And here's a pic of the boxcar I am watching...
