I have a 14' X 16' loop and run my 8E with 337 & 338 passenger cars illuminated and use my postwar zw and have no problem at all and have yet to take it pass 1/2 way up on the control

I have a 15x8 Standard gauge layout and I use (4) Z 250 watt transformers. These transformers you will see the best results with standard gauge trains. Must have 24+ volts going to these standard gauge trains. You can use Postwar Transformers, such as KW or ZW's but might be pushing them to max. Hope this helps!!
I use a 150w Type K and a 95 rheostat to run my #8 on it's simple oval. I also have a semaphore, 87 crossing gate, 145 gateman and a bell ringing signal drawing power with no problems. Although the rheostat does get a bit warm!

Trains, trains, wonderful trains. The more you get, the more you toot!
You do need track (smile). The post war transformers will work just fine. I have 2 standard gauge engines and some track and they run just fine with a ZW.
I have recently acquired my first pieces of Lionel standard gauge, including a 318 locomotive. Can this engine be run with a postwar Lionel transformer, such as a ZW or RW? Or do I need something else? (Besides the track, which I now also have to buy.) Thanks!
