You could put a snow plow on the front and use it as the lead steamer clearing the way.

If the pilot (cowcatcher) is completely gone you could install a dummy scale coupler and single steps on either side like switchers have.

A cool thing you could do is put a coupler on the front so you can run a double headed steamer. One of the forum members here did that on his and it looks and works great. I don't remember who did it. I'll try to find that thread.
i recently just picked up a lionel 8040 2-4-2 scout type engine....runs amazing....and its perfect except for one thing..........the cowcatcher is broken off..........its a shame because the rest of the engine is like brand new..........so...what do you guys think i should do...buy a new shell........or....add a dummy coupler to the front..maybe two small chains...put a light...grab rails..etc to it............any pics of anything anyone did to thiers would be nice........
