How about an update on the restoration of your 248. Questions: did you do sheet metal work first? Prime the sheet metal before paint? I would be interested to know your painting set up. did the motor need any mechanical repair?
I have just completed restoration of a 253 electric loco. See my avatar. I also restored (2) 613 pullman cars, a 614 observation & a 615 baggage car-all in terracotta & maroon. I saw this set at a local train show & had to have one for myself. That was my project for this year. Oh, along the way, I restored a 262E locomotive & sheet metal tender, also.
Just cover them with masking tape and trim around the edge.

I am trying to strip and repaint the tinplate body of a Lionel 248, my first restoration attempt. On parts that I can not remove ( such as the brass posts on the corners of the black frame that are crimped on) is there a protective coating that I can place on the parts prior to spraying the frame black? Then after drying, I can wipe off this protective coat and not have overspray on these parts, such as the couplers. I was just inquiring about tricks that those with experience may use with issues such as these. Thanks for any insight.
