Thank you for all your suggestions.  I did make the exposed wire very short and shoved the insulation down into the solder joint to provide some strain relief.  I did not glue the insulation to the connection because I did not want to contaminate the solder joint for the next time I have to re-solder.

You might also use a small dab of glue to secure the insulation to the contact to further prevent the wire from flexing at the connection.

Earl,

Keep the stripped portion as short as possible and insert the wire down into the rivet so that the insulation also goes down inside.  This way, any stress from flexing will be absorbed by the insulation, and not the solder joint.

3469 Dump Car Problem
Posted by EIS2 on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 8:15 PM

The electrical wire to the 3469 Dump Car shoe keeps breaking at the solder joint.  I am using that super-flexible wire and it has plenty of slack.  Is there some trick to keep the wire from failing at the solder joint?  My layout is small (6'x8') and uses 036 and 048 FasTrack so the wire experiences quite a bit of flexing.
