Boyd I modified a work caboose and added a power pickup assembly to it. I have a wire from the center pickup ready to hookup to the Porter. I have trouble with my Porter stopping in long switches. I tried taking apart my Porter but only got the cab off. I took out the 4 screws in the bottom of the drive assembly and could not get it apart.

Hi Boyd,
If you are still interested, I added power pick-up to the Porter without opening it up. I fished an approx. 22 gauge stranded wire with rather thin insulation through an existing hole and soldered it to the center rail roller pin (see photo below) and attached a wire for the outside rail pick-up to the cab.
The K-Line Porter is a Chinese puzzle to open and I would avoid opening it until it is absolutely necessary. The above mod has worked for years, just be sure your soldering is minimal and there isn't any shorting. I lightly and carefully coated the finished connection with super glue, applied with a straight pin, to insulate the solder and stiffen the wire at the connection. Before I soldered, I filed the side of the roller pin to get good adhesion of the solder and to allow more space for the joint.
Hope this helps!
Take care, Joe.

You should see the Copper Range 0-6-0 that I crammed TMCC and an electrocoupler into, it's pretty busy inside! Those little locomotives don't give you much room to work!
The lights, headlight and cab, stopped working on mine quite some time ago. Its a K-Line by Lionel unit. Tried to open it without success and contacted Lionel asking for information, also without any success. After seeing that photo I think I' ll leave mine as is or see if I can rig a headlight wired direct to the pickup.
There may be another screw under the smokebox that has to be removed
No, I bought mine two(?) years ago so it should be about the same.
I don't know if it makes a difference but mine was new 2-3 years ago and is not an older release.

There are four screws under the saddle tank you have to remove too. It's really a challenge to get it apart without breaking any wires. Mine no longer has lights because I had to take it apart to unplug the smoke unit which was shorting it out regardless of what position the on/off switch was in.
I know I shouldn't be posting this on the CTT site because it's on the OGR forum, but someone asked the same question. There is a picture of a disassembled porter in the thread that may be helpful.
