Carl,
Trains are a nice hobby, and I don't think there is anything wrong with sharing your hobby with other. I do however don't think it is appropriate to be taking trains to work.
Alan
alank,
I disagree with you, I believe taking trains to work relieves your mind of undue stress, if the job is not too demanding.
But, one of my friends, working on his trains at a job that did not require all of his attention, got a complaint against him by a Scrooge of an idiot, heartless, jerk of a boss.

Not to be a sour grapes but I never heard of this one and I don't understand what the point of doing this would be. Depending on where you and with whom you work, unless you ask first , this might backfire. Personally, I would feel goofy asking if I could bring a toy train to work. I could hear the wisecracks now. I am fortunately retired, but mixing personal hobby's and work while on the clock would be a bit much. "Oh, nice train there.." might be o.k as a reaction .... to each his own.
Nothing is more fairly distributed than common sense: no one thinks he needs more of it than he already has.
i work with kids and this will be highly appropriate. Thanks for the notice.
I would think most people think model train hobbyists as train nuts and taking a train to work work would just solidify their opinion.
i am a ups driver i dont have any where to put y trains but i do see a lot of trains go throught my hands with ebay sales i even play with some at lunch so to all those people that order trains and havebthem upsed thanks i make money playing with your trains.
I've done it all. I took a portable layout in one year, ran it under the office Christmas tree and everybody wanted to blow the whistle. There was one person that scoffed at the whole thing, but, my bosses boss was a train nut too. (That helped a lot).
If you have a questionable job situation, then taking anything to work would cause issues. Mostly, in this economy for self preservation, I just bring in one car and one piece of track and sit it on my personal workspace. You can discuss it during your break or lunchtime as long as you have cleared it with your immediate supervisor beforehand.
I'm wondering if the date was December 18, when lots of places have at work parties, perhaps that would be a better time since production work has stopped already.
I don't often bring a train to work, mostly because I leave home at 4:00 AM so I never remember to put one in my saddlebag. However, I have set up a trolley in the past and no one ever questioned my sanity. I work in a large office, and anyone that knows me at all knows I'm into trains, and most seem interested enough to ask me questions. I hope to bring a locomotive in this year on the 18th, but....I say that every year.
I have two offices in my working with veterans in the VA system.
In each of my offices there is a toy train layout and both layouts are loved by the veterans and their children, or grandchildren.
In my office at the Chillicothe VA Medical Center there is a Lionel layout with some Bachman running two trains on two loops, with some sidings with two other trains.
In the Ironton AMVETS office there is a Marx layout that impresses most people coming in to see me.
These are year round and will remain as long as I do!
