I wonder if the modern 774 is different from the older one? At any rate, the part number Lionel is giving me for the 774 lamp is 610-1449-300, and the photo they helpfully provide shows 1449 stamped on the lamp base. Wonder why lionel.com claims it is 300 ma, though?
I think that the lamp you're looking for is a 1449--G3.5, 14 volts, 200 milliamperes, 2 MSCP, 250 hours. However, you might like the 52 better--G3.5, 14.4 volts, 100 milliamperes, .75 MSCP, 1000 hours--same size, cooler, longer life, and easy to get, but not quite as bright--http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103783 .
The Lionel manual that I found for the 774 says that it uses the 6SP-9805-100, which seems to be an 18-volt 100-milliampere G4.5 lamp and might not even fit in your locomotive.

You may remember that I serviced a friend's American Flyer 290 a while back (with a lot of help from the Fourm - thanks again!) One thing I did not do at the time was replace the headlamp, reasoning that I could order a lot of parts at once later and save on shipping.
Well, the time has come, but of course, since I am Lionel guy, I am ordering Lionel parts--so I need advice on what non-Flyer lamp will work in this engine. The service diagram I found says PA8999 14v lamp. I found a similar-looking lamp on lionel.com that says 14v 0.3 Amp. It is for the 774 floodlight tower. Would that be appropriate?
