Yes the instructions say charge the BCR for 1 minute before attempting to run the engine. If it takes longer than that the BCR or chagring board is probably defective.

My experience with BCR \ MTH affirms what Bill said, they have to be given an initial charge from track power as he described, especially if they have been sitting idle for some time as the BCR unit is not a battery.

Nothing is more fairly distributed than common sense: no one thinks he needs more of it than he already has.
I HAD AN INTERNAL WIRE IN ONE OF THE J & W BCR'S WORK ITS WAY THRU THE SIDE OF THE BCR AND CONTACT THE METAL BATTERY HOUSING OF THE ENGINE AND THIS SHORTED OUT THE MTH BOARD CAUSING GREAT REPAIR EXPENSE. J& W IGNORED MY LETTER OF COMPLAINT. REPAIR PEOPLE EVEN SENT DEFECTIVE BCR TO J & W.
I have had BCR's in my MTH PS-1 locos for years, ever since the BCR's were first made available. I never have had a problem, at start-up, I let the PS-1 locomotive idle for 60 seconds at 13 volts. Then bring the voltage back down to 6 volts and hit the direction button on the DCS controller and away the consist goes.

I have installed the BCR's in my MTH Diesels. I recently ran into a problem with one of the units that was similar to a dead battery. This unit was not run for a couple of months. I thought the BCR was meant to overcome this issue. The engine became normal after a one hour period of charging. Has anybody else experienced this problem?
