Lock-on Wiring 101

Thanks guys.  Decided to go with the independent lines (14 AWD) to four lock-ons on each of the three tracks.  A little more work and expense. (But it is a hobby!)  Only "pain" was attaching the wire to the lock-ons.   (Such a small hole for a thick wire)  All done, works great.

If you were to use 14 AWG wire there should be NO problem hooking up all three lock-ons with the same run of wire, use 16 or 18 AWG to go up to the track lock-on(five to seven inches) if an under the table run. Splice the 14 gauge wires together with wire nuts and continue the run of wire to the next lock-on. The only time you would need a higher size wire is on a very long run, say about 45 feet or better, then use 12 AWG wire.

If you notice any power drop, check your tracks for rust or dirty connections. You do not need to run a seperate wire from the transformer for each lock-on, that is just a waist of money!

A tip that will help if you have a ZW or other two train transformer; when you have two tracks side by side for a few feet, run a jumper between the outside rails of each track as this helps to keep power loss to a minimum.

I use 3 on my outer loop (appx 30' running) .... 2 are home runs from the transformer and with the 3rd I got lazy and connected to one of the other lock-ons. I do notice only a very slight drop off of train speed on the section that is not connected directly to the transformer. It is also a section with a several curved sections which may also have something to do with the slowing of the train. Al in all the train speed is consistent.

Here is a wiring question.  Assuming there are three lock-ons, do you

Run a wire from the transformer to Lock-on #1 then continue the wire onto Lock-on #2 and then on to Lock-on #3  (a single continuous run)

OR

Run a wire from each Lock-on independently and then join them to a single wire to the transformer
