Oh well, come to think of it Ol' Jay C. performs a lot like a Lionel smoke unit  - which I'm sure is not the worst thing ever said in this connection.

I can't see that the smoke unit would get synched to the ditch lights but NOBODY has yet written the book that explains how you diagnose the problems regularly encountered with these confounded things.I agree it sounds like an electronic control issue if the unit works in conventional mode.

Since you have a very specific symptom for the problem I suggest you  try emailing Mike Reagan at Lionel as he's the real "Go To" guy on any service issue, especially if there is a known problem with this particular model. I don't have one and have not encountered your specific problem with my Legacy diesels, which either work great or sort of great.

Thanks BEARS'85 I did the reset of the engine to no avail.  I'm thinking that the smoke unit somehow might be in sink with the oscillating ditch lights pin and it is causing the unit to only last 10 sec. just like the ditch lites?  Hope DA BEARS can get to Super Bowl this year if CUTTLER doesn't quit on them again,

One thing that might work is a reset of the engine.  You can try a "soft" reset (Aux1, 0) or alternatively the fuller reset described in the manual. Sometimes this gets the TMCC\Legacy controls back to normal.

Well, I have to agree with the previous poster, since it runs fine in conventional mode, it sounds like a control issue, not a smoke unit issue.

When you want smoke run it in conventional mode.

Acually it sounds like something to do with one of the boards sorry to say. but I don't know much about electronics just a guess

Smoke unit question?

Hi GUYZ,

I have a CSX SD40-2 by Lionel and have a problem with the smoke unit.  It is a Legacy unit and when I put on the smoke it will only smoke for about ten seconds then stop.  If I stop and put it in reverse it will work again for ten seconds then stop.  The funny thing is when I test it in Conventional mode it will smoke great all the time but in Command only ten seconds.  Any thoughts?
