Here's my newest project.  I have been hoping to add a PA1 to my American Flyer collection, but the cost of a good one, even on eBay, scared me.  Recently an auction went up for a PA1 that someone had partially disassembled.  It was obvious from the photo that parts were missing, but it was not easily possible to discern exactly what parts.  But the price was right, so I bid anyway.  And wound up winning the auction for about $60.

The box arrived last week, and it did not take long to find out that this was a two-motor unit, and what was missing was the second power truck (it had the motor, just no truck).  Also missing were the axles and one half of a set of wheels.  Quite coincidentally there was another eBay auction for a dummy diesel truck, with wheels and axles.  It was an outright buy for $5.  So this past Thursday the dummy truck arrived, and by this morning I had it mounted up to the frame. That involved attaching the mounting yoke from the original power unit to the much shorter mounting for the non-powered unit. This evening I put it on the test oval, and by Odin it runs!  The double-motor diesel is now a single motor unit.

The paint on the shell was in miserable shape.  I wound up stripping it, and it's now in the paint shop.  So I will also have a modest investment in paint and new decals.  I will post the final results.
