Standard Gauge Track Plans!!
Posted by lionel2 on Monday, June 13, 2011 7:40 PM

Hello All,  I am looking for any books on track planning for standard gauge trains.  If you know any websites or links to sites with books for sale let me know.  I am planning for a 15x8 standard gauge layout, perfect rectangle layout.  I have all the track and switches, etc.  Just need a good permanant layout plan for a 15x8 layout that is functional.  I would like to have 2 or 3 locomotives running at one time.  Any ideas??  Anyone have the RRTRACK software for standard gauge??  I have the postwar lionel version of RRTRACK, but no standard gauge version. Thanks.

I would suggest you e mail Roger Carp with CTT. I cannot think of a single book that is devoted to Standard Gauge track plans. The old K-Line company re-printed an old Lionel book from before WW2 called Operating Lionel trains (I think). It had a lot of track planning ideas in it.

I thought of a track plan that would fit everything I have.  But, I only need 2 more RH switches and a 45 degree crossover.  I will try to revise it and see if I can get another plan thought up.  What might Roger Carp's email address be or where should I look to contact him??  Thanks.

He is one of the editors of CTT. Just look on one of the first pages of the magazine where they have all the pictures of the staff at the bottom. It should be there. Also, Lionel has started making standard gauge track components again, so you should be able to get what you need to complete your track plan.

I don't remember any standard gauge specific track plans. I've always considered O gauge plans and adapted them to standard gauge.

I found one intriqing track plan in an issue of CTT that I want to use for standard gauge.

Take a look at what I consider a wonderful Standard Gauge layout that might be of interest:

Looks like a really nice layout. The only change I would make would be to put the power station on it somewhere.

How about thortrains.net . He has track plans for most everything else so I'd be surprised if he didn't have some standard gauge.

If you scroll down 2/3 to 3/4 quarters of the way down, there is the back cover of a 1930 American Flyer catalog with a nice layout.
