Great ideas with the balsa wood.  That keeps everything more level than individual planks.  Brown and black shoe polish look like creosote.

DITTO what ROGER said BUCKEYE.  Will look real, with the balsa wood stained dark brown.  Will give it that kreyesote look.

Getting back to the original question.  I've used balsa wood and shaped "fillers as needed to represent the plank crossings that were common back in the '50's, and still are in many locals.  I scribed in individual planks after fitting the overall piece.

 rtraincollector:

Get a plastic scale car and take a torch to the front one corner and then put a big rock so it looks like the train hit it intot he rocks as it ran the signalWhistling sorry just a bad idea but thought it might get some to think

Not a bad idea.  How about a big semi trailer being hit by the train.  The trailer is in the ditch mangled beyond recoginition except that you barely read on the side of the trailer, ROSEYVILLE GRITS AND PASTE.  Nah, that wouldn't work, because one of the crossing gates would need to be broken in half.

not if he was trying to go around the gate. and I have a trailor from the earlier sets you know the stake body trailor no cab thou and think some of the sides are missing but that would make it more real looking. And you could put BTTS on the side under the ROSEYVILLE GRITS AND PASTE

Wyoming.....I took at look at the Scenic Express items and I might use that in one area of the layout, but I'm thinking about using my clay again and then placing planking on the top of the clay.  It is easy to mold the clay such that the wheel flanges pass through the crossing.   It almost becomes a re-railer of sorts.

How about Woodland Scenics Hydrocal?  Shape it the way you want & mark and paint it to look like concrete, brick, or blacktop.

Grade Crossing - Need some ideas
Posted by Buckeye Riveter on Saturday, June 11, 2011 5:27 PM

I have one grade crossing that I built with clay, HO Ballast and black paint on my layout .  It looks okay for the rural road, but I'm looking for some idea on how you have built a more urban grade crossing especially on a curved section of sectional track.

Thanks.
