"The Little Train of the Caipira" by Heitor Villa-Lobos, a tour de force in making a symphony orchestre sound like a steam locomotive.

Of course, "Mystery Train" by Elvis Presley is always good.

Train, train, sixteen coaches long . . .

My kids and I watched a toy train video some months back with some former late night talk show host narrating it. The title song was "Lionel Trains". My daughter still sings it to this day when we run trains. Not a bad song, either.

Dale Evans was searching for the perfect gift for Roy Rogers. She finally decided on a set of custom boots. Roy was thrilled and wore them everywhere.

One day Roy was out riding and suddenly he was attacked by a mountain lion. Unbelievably, the lion took Roy's new boots and shredded them! He was understandably upset when he made it back to the ranch and told Dale what happened.

Well Dale grabs her gun takes off in the direction of Roy's encounter. Some hours later she returns with the dead mountain lion. She goes and gets Roy, shows him the lion and then asks:

"Pardon me Roy - Is this the cat that chewed your new shoes?"...

Regards, Roy

Don't know about the song, but the artist should be "Boxcar Willie"

Many trains songs are too "Railroad specific."
I cast my vote for the generic "I've Been Working on the Railroad!"
No matter what we model or run, we all (Every scale and gauge) have been "Workin' on the Railroad!"
Chooo-Chooo, Whoo-Whoo and all that neat train stuff!

"A Man and a Train"--theme song from the film "Emperor of the North." I don't recall who wrote or sang it, so I'll have to dig out the video and check the credits one of these evenings. The film also ranks as my favorite devoted to trains and railroading--by far the most realistic I've ever seen.

My second choice would definitely be Arlo's rendition of "City of New Orleans."

Oops! . . . never mind! Thanks to Google, I found that the song was sung by Marty Robbins. Lyrics below:

A MAN AND A TRAIN
(Hal David - Frank DeVol)
« © '73 Casa David Music, ASCAP »

A man and a train a train and a man
They both tried to run as far and as fast as they can
But a man's not a train and a train's not a man
A man can do things that a train never can

Going up a mountain even half way to the top
The minute that a train runs out of steam it's gotta stop
But it's a different story when a man runs out of steam
He still can go a long long way on nothing but a dream

Going cross the country when a train pulls out of track
It has to stop and turn around and then start headin' back
But many miles from nowhere out where all the tracks are gone
A man who's got himself a dream can still keep going on

So don't try to stop me don't try to stop me cause nobody can
I've got a dream a beautiful dream and that makes me a man
No don't try to stop me don't try to stop me cause nobody can
I've got a dream a beautiful dream and that makes me makes me a man

I personally like City of New Orleans, but sung by Willie Nelson (though Arlo's version is great too).

I guess I missed Part 1, Hobby Anthem but I would offer Railway to Heaven.
I fondly remember My dad singing tenor in a quartet and that was one of their
favorites.

I posted this to the last topic, but there were computer problems and my post never made it. So I say again:

I love "City of New Orleans" by Arlo Guthrie... even though Steve Goodman wrote the song, Arlo put his signature on that one. That's probably my favorite all around train song.

BUT for the best song for our train hobby, for me it's the love song that Neil Young wrote for his son, "Transformer Man" off the computerized vocals "Trans" album. "Transformer Man" just hits it right on the head and I love the song.

For those who cringe at the thought of listening to the "Trans" album, there's a acoustic version of "Transformer Man" on Neil Young's "Unplugged" album and on the VHS of the MTV show.
