Real Coal loads for Lionel Mohawk tender
Posted by Locojunkie on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 12:56 PM

What is the best way to make the coal bunker in my Lionel Mohawk tender look real? I have seen some HO and O gauge locomotives where the coal "glistens" like it has real silica in it like actual coal. The paint is coming off of the coal bunker on my Mohawk. A problem that everyone says happens to all of Lionel Mohawks. Thanks.

Have you tried using real coal in the tender? Anthricite type of coal will keep it's shine if washed up first then used. Don't go with the cheaper grade of coal, which is bituminis, it lacks any shine when cleaned up.

If I remember correctly the coal loaded at the Harmon engine terminal was bituminous and had a dull graphite like sheen. But that's model railroading and some of have anthracite left over from home heating and it looks better.

Get thee over to a pet store and buy loose charcoal for Aquarium Filters.  You can crush it to scale.

Great Ideas everyone, how about the process? Do I need a certain paint or a sealer after I sprinkle the coal on the tender pile? Do I need to cut the existing coal load out? Thanks
