Hello,
How were the cab numbers and NYC heralds applied to the kit version of the 700E?
Thanks,
Darrell
Ddoub,
According to my Greenburgs 1901-1945 Vol 2 reference, the 700E's number's, etc., were rubber stamped. The photos are pretty good and show the rubber stamping. The notes on the kit versions are not specific, simply stating that they were the same as the 700E.
I do not own a prewar 700E but have observed a few up close at York and other meets. They all appear to be rubber stamped to me, but I am not qualified to comment further.
Good luck on this.
Regards, Roy
Thanks for your time! I guess I can assume that rubber stamps where included with the kit. Is there anyone out there who has assembled a 700K?
Darrell,
I did a little more poking around on this. Note I made an error above - the Greenburg book covers from 1902 to 1942 when production of toys ceased for WWII.
From photos and articles I reviewed - the 700K loco and tender were delivered in gray primer and it appears decals may have been supplied. The best photo I found was also in the Greenburg book and I did not pay good attention to it yesterday. There is a very distinct yellowed film with the lettering indicating a decal was used for the loco # and tender lettering.
Looking at several Ed Stauffer books I have on the NYC and NYC Hudsons, I tried to find you a reference on the fonts used and discovered that the NYC used a pretty wide variety.
This web site has the font (Grand Central) for 20th Century Limited cars. Maybe contacting them might help produce the Hudson fonts. http://www.railfonts.com/ - http://www.railfonts.com/Samples/grand-demo.html
I also know that Model Railroader Magazine has published some articles in the past about NYC Hudsons and maybe they can assist in locating the various font types.
If you desire a rubber stamp, note many of the restoration folks have rubber stamps made and it is certainly possible here. One just needs to match the font (typ sans serif) and size.
The 700K used decals, or, as Lionel called them, "transfers". The part number, presumably for a set, is 700K-25. They were supplied in kit no. 4, 700K-4; or the set could be bought separately for $.10.

Bob,
Thank you very much! A 700 is the next thing I would like to put in the collection. There are two 700K's I've been looking at, and both appear to have been rubber stamped.
