Thanks Ralph, I immediately had a look at that link and the engine is the same one.  I then entered in the car numbers and found a number of those.  I also got back into google and found one 1958 train set no. 1590 that I have all the parts to.  But the box I have has a different number.  No big deal as I understand there were sets sold that were not in catalogs.  It's just neat finding these items and seeing how old they are.  I have most of the boxes, not in great shape but that's how I got the numbers on some of the cars as they weren't marked on the cars.  I have an extra flat car without the load (logs or pipes) but found it on google - made in 1957, either 6111 or 6121.

For cwburfle, thanks for your info too.  You're right, I have the box for that flat car with the range patrol truck.  I see it's hard to come by, it's yellow but the paint is chipping but all the steps are intact.  I'd better keep an eye on everything as our 4 and 6 year old grandsons are having a lot of fun with them.  I only cleaned the wheels for now.  There are some paint splatters on several of the cars but I'm afraid if I try to clean it off I may do more harm than good.  Thanks to both of you, I appreciate the help.  Mickey

If the original range patrol truck is still with the set, the flatcar with Range Patrol truck is the most desireable car by a long shot. Sounds like you must have the boxes, otherwise, how would you know all the numbers.

Be careful cleaning up those trains. Some of them might have marking that will come off or smear with improper cleaning.

Help ID Old Train Set 9655

Friend of mine gave me his old train set with a few extras that I'm cleaning up.  I'm curious about it, what came in the original set and when it was made.  I've tried researching it but my resources are limited and would appreciate any help any of you may offer.

The set box has Lionel Trains on it and the number 9655.

The locomotive number is 249, a 2-4-2, with a tender (No. 250T), Pennsylvania.  It only goes in forward and reverse, no neutral.  No whistle, no smoke, no headlight.  The engine shell is plastic.  There's an orange/red stripe that runs down the side of the engine and tender with the lettering done in white.

There's a blue canister car, No. 6112-85; a red hopper car, No. 6476; an orange box car, No 6014-85; a yellow flat car with a range patrol truck, No. 6151; a pennsylvania red caboose (no light), No. 6017.  I think included is/was a type 1015 45 watt toy transformer (several of you already helped my get it apart to replace the power cord).

Couplers on all the cars are magnetic.

There's some tubular straight and curved 027 track and a 90 degree crossing.  There's even a No. 1008 camtrol manual spring loaded uncouple piece that fits into a straight section of 027 track.

Not a big deal but if anyone has any ideas on this, thank you.

Mickey
