MTH makes a PS2 Upgrade Kit that includes all boards, wiring harness, and bulbs.  A 40 plus page step-by-step installation manual (which you can look at on-line to see if it fits your problem).   List price $179, to MTH Club Members $149, I have upgraded 5 of my locomotives (Aristo "G" gauge).  When done you download the Sound File of your choice from the MTH WebSite.

Part Number for the steam kit 50-1901

An Aristo-Craft RS-3 upgraded to PS2

Replaced several PS1 and electronic E units with ERR kits.  Works great.

I second the recommendation to contact BIll at Modern Toy Train Parts, I got a couple of ERR kits from him, and I'm waiting on yet another.  He has discount prices over ordering direct from ERR, and it's the same stuff.

You should be able to get something similar to MTH ProtoSound with the RailSounds package, I can't say it'll be exactly the same.

goto this site it may help you and bill if you call him will help you know what each item does and how much. I've dealt with him many times all good. you can get ac commander ( which you need for ac track) and get generic steam for another $85 so your only talking $145 and you have tmcc with steam sound.

In order to upgrade to a better sound system, you will have to remove the current sound sysytem and possibly the directional control at the same time.

I think that MTH used QSI sound boards in their pre-P.S.-2 engines. So it might be difficult to remove the sound unit itself without the reverse board. You need to have a unit that converts the track voltage to useable D.C. for motor control, the motors are D.C. can motors in most MTH engines.

A circuit board that has a rectifier bridge built-in or other device to convert to useable D.C. voltage will work. Williams by Bachmann sells a circuit board upgrade kit for around $140.00, this will work with MTH motors.  If you buy the Williams circuit board buy it from Marty at MA & PA Junction, as Bachmann charges an extra $20.00 or more to buy it direct from them.

Hey All,

I currently have an MTH R-T-R Southern Pacific Daylight Passenger set; but instead of Proto Sound 2.0, i was only able to get it with Loco Sound. I was interested in purchasing from the Electric Railroad Co. there Railsounds Northern Sound Board to put in the tender to get the chuffing effect that i desire. I am hoping that this will be as close to the Proto Sound version that had eluded me at the time. IO have heard good comments about the ERR's products so i am going to give it a try. Anyone have a thought as to whether or not this would be a good move or should i just leave it alone? Thoughts would be a big help.
