As far as I can determine there are at least two issues of this locomotive that are numbered 2329.  Are there only two versions and if so how does one distinguish between the 1958-59 version and the 1997 issue.

well to start there is more than 2 issues Lionel just did a reissue under the conventional classics remake so theres copy 3 I have the 1997 version and to answer your question the main difference is it has TMCC in it. and it is stock number. 6-18315 the newer one not sure of the stock number the set number is 6-38339

Also the 1997 version will have some switches under it for tmcc and sound i believe mine is packed away at the moment. also like the present remake ( may 2011 CTT states) and mine also appears to have where the blue seems to have bled thru some and the yellow  VIRGINIAN seems to have a green tint to it but not sure if thats the way on the original also.

Thats what I can tell you of the 3 versions I know of.

I have the Greenberg's Lionel pocket price guide for 2010, and it lists either a GE E-33 or EL-C Electric locomotive as being a 2329. So there may be two versions of the original 2329 from 1958 & 59. There could be other rare versions that never went into a catalog.

Lee I would think that must be a misprint of some sort as my prior years ones all state 2329 Virginian Rectifier, 58-59 in the post war section. But still seems interesting as I don't have a 2010 priceguide
