Thanks everyone for the ideas. If any of you can post pictures of what you have done and what you used That would be great.

Thanks,

 kevin.

I've used roof tiles of various colors in my layout's Fortner Yard. The small reconstructed yard in my town is just gravel or ballast and asphalt. North Ave yard which I pass every day is black dirt, complete with ruts, water-filled holes, weeds, oil spot, sand piles (from the engine sanders)...

The couple of switch yards I've been in had paved roads and parking areas for the tower, and the rest was dirt, gravel, or balast.

In the Hialeah railyard where we used to work on our steam locomotive, the ground was all sand & gravel with ruts, until you got to the various buildings, yard tower & access road, that is all paved. There are also patches of weeds, some as high as 6 feet, as well as a mountain of old rotted wooden ties.

Having lived near Conway, PA I can tell you that for the most part the ground is just dirt or mud stained rock. The 'roads' are mostly gravel, unless it is the road leading from the main road to the tower, then that is paved, as is the parking lot for employees. I don't remember seeing concrete used for road surfaces.

If you Google Railyard Pictures you'll get a lot of good ideas.

Switchyard ground cover??
Posted by KRM on Saturday, April 16, 2011 7:20 PM

I am looking for ideas for a good switch yard ground cover to use on my layout. Inside the 16’x4’ section I plan to have as a switchyard / parking section inside the main outer loop with 5 rails and would like some kind of gravel or concrete looking base. I am thinking of using Readygrass as the base on the 8’ x 12’ side that I will have my logging scene and train.

Any ideas or pictures would be of great help.

Thanks,

Kevin
