The method you described is a good way of attaching an abutment. Check out my web site below see some ideas on the bridge abutments and piers.

Are there any articles detailing minutely and specifically how to integrate a bridge into your layout? Are the abutments placed in front of the material (plywood or plywood and styfoam sheet) which is your roadbed support? In that case, you would probably have a riser which supports the roadbed base at the edge to which you could attach the abutment, and the height of the abutment would be such that the bridge could sit on it. Is that could correct? Would really like to a sketch showing the elements of this boundary between benchwork and almost thin air.

Further, Rustoleum makes a  textured spray paint they call carribean sand. I find it gives a good simulation of concrete in color and texture, but it contains toluene and acetone. I am afraid to spray it on Lionel and RailKing tunner portals, Any thoughts?
