Last Friday I was atan LHS and they had a repo of the passenger set on display for sale. I forgot to see who made it, but it is a stunning and beautiful set.

Hello Red Comet,

Welcome to the forum!  You are fortunate to have inherited such a nice set.  Do both of your gondolas ( Flyer called them sand cars) have boxes?  Do they have the same kind of trucks.

Here are some photos of the pages in the 1936 catalog that show your set.  Does the engine have 4 wheels in the leading truck and are they of the same size or 2 different sizes?

Please post some photos of your set if you have the capability to do so.

Set Number is 1740-RW for 1936 only.  Cars are Gondola, Crane Car (catalog calls it a wrecker car #3025), Tank Car (#3210), Machinery Car (also identified as a log car if it has lumber which it does have in the catalog illustration - #3216) and Caboose.  You're missing the tank and the crane car.

American Flyer Hiawiatha freight set help
Posted by Red Comet on Saturday, April 2, 2011 6:55 PM

I just received a American Flyer pre war Hiawaitha freight set, it has a whistle but the cars seem odd, 2 ggondolas, a machine car and a caboose. Can someone tell me what this set should look like? I got the odd track for the whistle and boxes but would also like to know the set number and box dia. Thank you.
