New Wheels for a Marx Commodore Vanderbilt Locomotive
Posted by allstate811.40 on Friday, April 1, 2011 7:32 PM

Hi all.  I was wondering if anyone here had any idea where I could find four new wheels (2 geared and 2 not geared) for the above locomotive.  I have seen used ones, but am afraid I will wind up in the same boat I am in now-----loose wheels.

If there aren't any available that anyone knows of, is there a procedure that would fix the wheels so they stay good and tight?  The axles aren't splined, which difinitely doesn't help.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I had to pull the motor gear from mine this week, and earlier I had mounted and wired a 1927 horn on my wrangler and used Locktite brand thread locker which comes in two versions, one can be pulled apart and the other permanent..I was mulling over small application on the gear shaft..to keep it from slipping.

Nothing is more fairly distributed than common sense: no one thinks he needs more of it than he already has.

Hi.  Thanks for the reply.  I will try some of that locktite.  Guess I will have to work fast to get rod timing and wheel width correct before it sets.  Ah yes, the joys of modelrailroading.  :-)

Thanks again for the information.

Regards,

I have a Lionel #60 trolley that had a loose wheel after I pulled it on and off a couple of times(though it does have spines on the shaft).  I used super glue around the axle and then pushed it into the wheel.  It has held OK for over 2 years now and I run it a lot.   If you try Locktite or super glue, remember to clean the axle and inside of the wheel with some type of cleaner first.

You might also consider forgeting about your motor and for about $20 or so, you could also purchase a used Marx motor off of Ebay and replace the whole motor.
