Lionel got it wrong
Posted by overall on Thursday, March 31, 2011 2:27 PM

I was looking at the new Lionel catalog on line. When I saw that the Southern Railway tuxedo diesel, a General Electric product, had a low short hood, I was extremely disappointed. All of Southern's hood diesels had high short hoods. It is seldom that the tuxedo paint scheme gets modeled. The earlier green and gold is more popular, still, there is a group of us Southern fans that grew up with the tuxedo paint scheme. I would respectfully ask Lionel to plase check with someone who is knowledgable in these matters before going to production with a model. There are many fans in histirical societies that would offer their expertise for free.

I would suggest contacting Lionel's Customer Support line

Also a lot of times they make one mold and put different paint schemes on it whether its correct for the road name or not. They all do it to save on cost of another mold and trying to get there profit they want back out of the mold.

Ask them if that is just the catalog illustration or will the Southern U30C be customized like the U28CG model was several years ago. On some of the super-detailed O scale locomotives they have been able to make road specific details. I just wonder why they would not, since that was their whole point of having the super-detailed O Scale Locomotive line.

Contact them through the Talk To Us feature on the lionel website.

In the past Lionel has changed cataloged items after being informed of what is correct. That doesn't mean we all get our wish though. Would be nice huh. My feeling on this subject is had I waited a long time for something to be made I would go with it right or not. But being correct would make it that much nicer.

GEORGE,

I feel your pain.  On my NS Genset that just came out, Lionel screwed up the NS Horse have it facing the wrong way.  I'll just have to live with it.

Lionel has been painting the New Haven F3 diesels all wrong for years, I'm just happy it's lettered New Haven.

(The "Checker board" was tried only on an experimental talgo train, Lionel also painted the F3 in an FL9 paint scheme, but backwards - White should be on top and Orange on the bottom with Black between.  What they used was the EP5 Electric's paint scheme.)

Thank you Don, for clearing-up the New Haven color scheme.

I always liked their color combo., but I never bought any goodies with that color scheme and I like it to be prototypically correct.

I try to find a color photo of a prototype engine, freight, or passenger car, but at times the're hard to find.

Otherwise, I would have to buy books with color photos, which are expensive and I don't like to go to my local library.

Oh, by the way,  back to the fast freight Lionel boxes, I found out that the prefix letter 'X' stands for boxcar, not 'Fast/Express' boxcar.

My apologies to you and all for my error with the 'X' factor being: 'Express.'
