I have the same car, ordered several months ago as a "break-up" car from this C & O set. Happened to look at the same box a few days ago, and again wondered the same thing. Wasn't sure if the box was a substitute, but from the comments here, apparently Lionel put this car in a C&O box because it was part of the set, never mind that it is a Great Northern car. Don't know of any other incidence of this happening; probably just a China factory mixup, which happens occasionally. I have an MPC era Pennsy hopper that has a box labeled Penn Central, and there are other examples of box labelling errors, even in US production, although usually not a completely different line name. Incidently, this Great Northern stockcar was a somewhat unusual offering, being a standard "O" car in an otherwise traditional sized set. Lionel has done this occasionally before, but I'm not sure what the reasoning is.

It is marked and part-numbered as a C&O stock car, because it was included in a "C&O" set from one of the 2003 catalogs.

I don't think it's normal either, but that's the explanation my dealer gave me. There may have been precedents way before I started back in O-Gauge (1994-95).

The only way you were able to get it separately was because it was part of a break-up of that 2003 catalogued set.

Lionel Stock Cars C&O vs Great Northern

I ordered Lionel Stock Car L17706 which is described as "C&O Stock Car"; however; upon receipt the box says "C&O Stock Car", but inside the box is a red Great Northern Stock Car Numbered 156001.

Anybody have a clue what Lionel is up to?

Thanks
