i got this train not working from my uncle. i had to pull out the SMOKE PISTON & CRANK to fix it but now i can't git the crank back in and im not 100% sore if i got the piston in right. can someone post a picture of this tran with the noise off of it?
any help would be really appreciated thanks

The crank itself lays in a groove on both sides of the boiler when the shell is upside down. The steam chest is what holds it in place. The long end goes on the left side where the cross head pushes it forward each time and pushes the smoke piston up. You have to also make sure you aline the smoke unit with the smoke stack hole. The piston simply rests up inside the smoke unit . This engine can be hard to reassemble.

If you look real close, you can see the round end of the crank next to the cross head. Just in front of the front left wheel.

Joe, if it has the original smoke unit you have two options. The first is buy a bottle of Lionel smoke pellets that many hobby shops sell(14.95) or on Ebay, and the second is buy smoke liquid smoke fluid. The best I have tried and use is JT's mega steam. Just drop about 4 drops in at a time. If you get no smoke the heater element is bad but can be replaced, or just buy another complete smoke unit. When putting these engines back together you have to watch out not to pinch the head light or smoke unit wires. Route the headlight wire around the smoke unit.

It's to puff the smoke up and out of the stack while the train is in motion. Otherwise, the smoke would simply dribble out in a very unimpressive way. Until I repaired the piston mechanism in my 681, that's exactly how it behaved.

I wouldn't think a turbine (681) would puff smoke like a piston engine.

A PRR-6200 wouldn't, but a Lionel 681 does. They had to add a cam to a driver axle, since there are no cranks on the wheels. But even the reciprocating models are unprototypical, with one puff per revolution instead of four.

The hole is in the bottom. The piston forces air up into the heater unit, and from there it exits through the opening on top.
