What do I have 4678 engine w/Hamiltonian Cars
Posted by Johnny's Train on Monday, March 7, 2011 10:31 AM

I have had this set since I bought it at an Auction back in the 60's as a young boy. I'm a complete novice at toy trains.  I have been looking around web sites and have not sean this exact style. They look very similar to the 1927 era but not quite.  The engine is a 4678 and the cars I have are Hamiltonian's Observation 4342 and Pullman 4341 all three are red.  Also have a box of track, transformer, depot and cast  light.  I remember running it back in the early 70's but that was the last time. Help me identify.

Welcome Johnny's Train,

From what I can find, your train is not a Lionel, the numbers are not correct for Lionel. Could be one of these; Ives, American Flyer, Marx or American Model Trains(AMT), or even a Japanese made train that looks like Lionel.

Like somebody else mentioned, pictures can help identify.

It's American Flyer prewar.  Go over to the Prewar American Flyer Pictures thread by Northwoods Flyer and look at the index on the first page.  A discussion and pictures of the Hamiltonian cars can be found on page 25.
