Lionel caboose ID help please
Posted by papa3376 on Friday, February 25, 2011 7:10 PM

Hi all,  I recently won the bid on a Lionel caboose.  It was noted that it was in the wrong box so I need help to ID it so I can get the instructions to get it apart to repair/replace a couple items.  It's an ATSF (red/yellow) scale size,  smoking, with a flashing ETD.  The number on the side is 96381.  Thanks for your help.  George

Not trying to start anything but are you sure its Lionel does it say Lionel on the shell somewhere ( not the frame as I have seen where someone took a Lionel frame and put another maker shell on it.) A pic would help a lot.

Are you sure you have the right number? The number 96381 is not listed in Greenberg's pocket guide for 2010. Another thing is that it could have been sold at a Target store, because I bought a couple of things at Target that are Lionel but the Greenberg's pocket guide don't list them anywhere.

Having a photo or the number from the box would be a major help in identifying the caboose.

It appears to be all Lionel.  Everything seems to fit exactly as it should.  Sorry but can't upload a picture at this time.  Thanks for the reply.  George

Won this off the choochoo auction web site and it came in the wrong box which was noted when I bought it.  I guess the number on the side ot the car has nothing to do with it's catalog number.  Kind of like the 700E has 5344 on the cab.  The 17XXX series cabooses on the Lionel web site parts guides seem to match so I did get the car repaired.  The 17XXX seriers in the Greenberg guide don't list an ATSF caboose but like I said it did help with the research at the Lionel site.  Thanks for the help.  George
