Since the first time I ran the B unit the horn never worked and had problems on the track. Then today the circuit board popped and started smoking badly. When I opened it up the horn circuit board was badly fried and the foam pad had disintegrated.
I was able to locate the diagram for the 6-8184 on the Lionel website to identify the part numbers. The diagram did not show the horn parts but they were listed.
8152-50 Horn Circuit Board & 8152-35 Foam Pad. But it also listed a part number 8152-536 for speakers which I do not have in my train.
Does anyone know if there is a diagram available for the 6-8481 that shows the horn assembly/wiring? Also does anyone know if I need to add the speakers?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
There should already be a speaker mounted in the fuel tank.
There should be four wires connected to the board. Two in are for the connection to the track - chassis and center rail. Two out go to the speaker.
The board is serviced as a unit. The components probably could be replaced if you could test them and replace as needed.
The board is available from
MY TRAIN PARTS USA
or
Brasseur Electric Trains
for around $30.00.

Ah I see it now. I was so focused on the circuit board I neglected to see the speaker mounted underneath. The information you supplied is very helpful thank you very much!
The circuit board sat ontop of a foam pad. Do you know what is used to secure the two to the train? Do I need to order a special adhesive? The circuit board was disconnected from the pad when I opened the unit. I am thinking that is why it got charred. I have never had a Lionel train burn up like this before.
Thanks again
The foam pad is nothing but double-sided adhesive foam padding. I buy a top quality replacement at an office supply store and cut it to fit. I have also used the Blu-tack / poster tack compound(4 to 6 small "balls") as stand-offs for securing SOS, whistle, & horn boards.
I cannot thank you enough Rob! The information you supplied is everything needed.
No problem.
