Is It Worth $60???
Posted by vsmith on Sunday, February 20, 2011 9:01 PM

On the subject of Continuing Education as I learn more and more about the O subject, I picked this up this weekend, its a Lionel 1666 O-27 w/ die cast body, according to the shop its pre-war, the tender has bayonette type prewar coupler. I got it for $59.99 at a LHS, ran pretty good on their test track, it needs a good lube. Even though I'm primarily a Marx collector I figured at this price I had better not pass it up, was I right too grab it?

Yep I'd say you did good. A prewar 1666 in good condition is worth more that that.

My greenberg guide says they go for around $95-$145. I hear they're nice running locomotives when maintained and cleaned up.

The 1666 is a fine locomotive.  $60 bucks compared to prices today for new locomotives is a really good buy.  Plus you got a post war classic, a part of Lionel history.  I picked one up years ago that needed repair, Finally last year I got the necessary parts from Dr. Tinker and now it runs well on my layout.

So - Yes you did good.  Enjoy your new Locomotive.

Yeah, good buddy, you done good. Now please don't let this Lionel fling interupt that beautiful wind-up Marx project you started back in October. I'm still waiting on an extensive update with photos!!!! I hope you persue writing an article for submission to CTT- they need it badly.

Your 1666 looks good to me. I think I would have purchased it at sixty dollars too.
But Greenberg is just a guide. In my area, I think one would be a very hard sell at the $95-140 that SantaFe158 quoted.

Thanks all, I was looking at Ebay and there were a couple "buy it now" 1666's at around $60 so I guess I paid just about the right "street value" for it. So far its a nice engine, only thing that seams off is the lightbulb, easily replaced. I lubed it and it seams to be running alot smoother now, the tender has a box coupler so I think I will need a few tenders with different couplers to match my Marx cars or if I pick up any Lionel.

It might be worth $60.00, however according to Greenberg's guide the # 1666 is(1946 & 47) post war! A # 1666E is pre war, as the letter E designates that it has a newer style reversing unit for pre war era. The pin and box coupler is from the pre war era, if you have mixed engine and tender combo it has less value than the original set.

Even Doyles guide to Lionel lists the # 1666 in the post war era, 1946 & 47, the # 1666 was used in both passenger and freight sets. The 1666 is modeled after the # 224 Lionel steam loco, and many parts will fit from a 224 or 224E.
