Scale Auto Carriers
Posted by casconi on Monday, February 14, 2011 2:31 PM

I wanted to know if anyone knew if Lionel has ever made scale modern auto carriers. I have seen some made by MTH, but wanted to know about Lionel. Any help is appreciated.

I don't believe Lionel has. Atlas O made a jumbo scale articulated auto rack (See Spring 2001 News & Notes).

MTH may have made one, but I don't recall seeing one in the office.

Even if LIONEL made an O Scale proportioned Auto Carrier, they would still end up shortening it.

The O Scale Husky-Stack "48'" Intermodal Car has a container well that is 3' shorter than a true O Scale car. Why it is shortened to 45' is a guess.

Those of us in S gauge do love the Lionel auto carriers because, with a change to S Helper Roller Bearing Trucks and "Caboose Couplers" and a few ladders, they become almost perfect S "scale" (well, . actually,  Hi Rail) Auto Carriers

Lionel could make O Scale Auto Carriers somewhere in New Jersey.

What has to be built are models of the Auto Carriers of the 1970's and 1980's.

The auto racks would be Whitehead & Kales and the Flat Cars could be Bethlehem Steel or ACF.

They need the version of that time period because the galvanized screens have perforations that let in light on both sides.

Red Caboose makes a highly detailed Auto Carrier in N Scale that is affordable.

I hope that Lionel can make the same Auto Carrier model in O Scale affordably.
