How do I operate the Williams E-unit
Posted by pittpa1958 on Monday, February 14, 2011 2:18 PM

I have a Pense Loco #4656 (Ithink it's an FM. I want to set the e-unit to always go forward. The old Lionels have a manual switch but this is a newer electronic e-unit. Can I set it for on direction? If I set it to always go forward can it be set back is desired? Thanks

Correction The unit is a Williams(TM) by Bachmann, Diesel SD-45, Pennsylvainia RR. Any help on setting or disabling the electronic e-unit is appriciated. Thanks Again

Instructions for Installing a Switch to Williams Relay Boards(FOR REVISION 4 BOARDS ONLY)

Before starting: Please be aware that performing this change voids the warranty on the reverse board of this locomotive.

1) Solder a wire from the junction of the 22K/10K resistors (see diagram) to one outside terminal

2) Unsolder and lift inner end of the 100K resistor (see diagram)

3) Solder a wire from the now free end of the 100K resistor to the other outside terminal of the switch

4) Solder a wire from the now vacant hole in the board (hole vacated by inner end of 100K resistor) to the center terminal of the switch.  CAUTION: DO NOT allow switch solder connections to contact metal floor of locomotive.

It may be a much older Williams, then, or less than 6-12 mos. old.  The  Williams(TM) by Bachmann twin motored diesels that I have seen all have this board.

Do you have the original box the engine came in? And what name is on the box and what country was it made in? Is it Williams, or Williams with Bachmann logo somewhere on the box, or does it have Crown Edition?

In order to help you somebody must be able to date the unit first, as Williams when just Williams used four, possibly more, differant reverse boards. Then there is the Williams by Bachmann circuit board. You could be surprised and find out that your Williams engine is much older than what you think it is!! The best advice is to go to the Bachmann website and go to the "Ask the Bachmann" then go to "Williams."

I have a Pennsylvania Loco #4656. The unit was built by Williams Reproductions Limited from Columbia Maryland. It is a Diesel SD-45, Pennsylvania RR.  Can I easily set it for the forward only direction? If I set it to always go forward can it be set back is desired? Once I opened the unit I found that the card is different than I see in the documentation and card image on this forum. It is probably older than I thought or the current cards. The box is labled Williams Electric Trains and stamped PENN RED SD-45 4201 REV Thanks

Do you see anywhere on the original box what country or state in the USA that is on the box itself? Does it have Crown Edition on the box?

If nobody will help you I may have a suggestion for you to lock it into forwards only, but you will not be able to undo this modification. Take out the circuit board and replace it with a 6 amp 50 volt or higher bridge rectifier. Hook-up the motor wires to the positive(+) and negative(-) marked on the bridge rectifier, the other leads go to track power. If you want to add a switch for direction control; use a double pole double throw(DPDT) toggle switch rated for at least 10 amps and 50 volts and wire this in.  I bought my bridge rectifier at Radio Shack or you might be able to buy one from Mouser Electronics but you will have to pay for shipping.
