Home made coal loader?
Posted by Boyd on Friday, February 4, 2011 1:34 AM

About 6 years ago I bought a $100 RC tank. I put all of about 2 hours on it and one track came apart. Glue would not hold so last night I took it apart. There is a motor with gearbox that rotates the turret. I will use it to spin a turntable for the layout. There are two more motors with gearboxes, one to drive each track. I'd like to make some kind of elevator with one but I'm not sure if I can salvage either of the tanks tracks and modify them. The 2nd track started to rip in half. Is there something else out there I could adapt to this motor/gearbox to build some kind of elevator? I'm nearly broke so it can't be expensive.

What a great idea. I love to tinker with things like this.  You can use those motors to pull almost anything or rather turn almost anything if not the actual tracks.

Don't know how large your tank is, but replacement conveyor belts for the Lionel 397 coal loader are $10.00-ish, last I looked.

Old Automotive Timing belts with the ridges on one side could be used to make conveyor belts for coal.  Ask someone who repairs automoblies if they have any old belts to use for the coal loader.
