I appreciate the information.  I'll start looking around for remote-control tracks soon.  Gotta get some coal too.  Actually, I was wondering if anyone has come up with an alternative to the commercially produced coal.

On the remote-control tracks - is there any difference between the 6019, 1019 and the ones produced now, the 6-12746?  I'm assuming it's just the time periods they were produced and perhaps minor changes but any of them should work with the 3469 - is that correct?

I guess while we're on the dump car subject - what's the difference between the 3459 and 3469 dump cars.  Is there a preference or difference in the way they operate.  I'm guessing one difference is 3459 is pre-war and 3469 is post-war.  Any other difference?

Thanks again,

Mickey

Don't forget to pick up some coal too!  Neat cars, enjoy!

In O-27, you can use any 1019 or 6019 remote control track for the 3469.

In "O", you can use any RCS or UCS remote control track.

OK, I think I just figured this out.  To operate the dump mechanism both tabs, or maybe they're called shoes, rid up on rails of the remote-control track.  By each one touching a separate rail they complete a circuit.  Current is supplied to the circuit by pressing the appropriate button on the remote-control and thus the dump mechanism is activated.  So I got both cars to work by touching a ground to one shoe and the hot wire to the other shoe.  Now I just need to get a remote-control piece of track.

Thanks.  I just looked at the Lionel website and see that there are remote-control tracks for both 0 and 0-27.  The 0-27 (6-12746) says it has the UCS controller which I assume is the part that is used to activate the dumping cars.  So I need the 0-27 version to match up with the 0-27 tubular track that I am using.

But what I don't understand is what function the tab on each of the trucks perform.  When the car is on the remote-control track the tabs are pushed up but I can't tell if they are completing or breaking a circuit.  The two cars I have are old and I'm wondering if the tab mechanisms are not adjusted properly.  And then, secondly, I'm thinking that in order to get the dumping mechanism to work one would still have to activate the magnet in the center of the track but I'm not sure.  That's why I'd like to know the details involved in getting the dumping mechanism to work.

I did try to activate it by attaching a ground to the wheels of the truck and then touching the metal part of the tab with the hot wire but nothing happened.  Again, not knowing exactly what needs to happen, I'm stumped trying to test the cars.

I don't see why you couldn't attach a wire with a gator clip to the frame or wheel, then touch 12 volts or so to the sliding shoe. Straight off a transformer. Its just a solenoid plunger that shoots up ward driving the dump bin over.

There is an operating track for the cars with "shoes".  It has 5 rails, the added rails are for energizing the shoe that in turn usually activates a selonoid making the car work.  The same track is used for the coil type couplers.

3469 dump car test
Posted by kgstones on Thursday, February 3, 2011 12:49 PM

Searched the forum and couldn't find an answer so I would appreciate any help possible.  I just recently purchased a couple of 3469 ore dump cars - I'm pretty sure they are the older models from the 1950s.  Currently all I have are  0-27 uncoupling tracks (6-65149).  I tested the couplers on the cars with the uncoupling track I have and they work fine.  However, I don't know exactly how the car dump mechanisms work.  I see each truck has a shoe under it that has wiring to it so it must play a part in the process.

I'd really appreciate if someone would explain exactly how the dumping mechanism works and what each part of the function each part on the car plays.  Plus I'm using 0-27 tubular track so I'd appreciate knowing what track piece I need to operate the cars properly.

Lastly, until I get the proper track piece, how can I test the dumping mechanism on the cars.  I can't figure out the electrical set up and don't want to burn or short out anything.

Sure appreciate some help on this, thanks all.
