Hello all, I have a 497 coaling station that is very noisy. Is there someplace or somewhere I should oil or lube?? If I take it all apart will I mess up the string line that is on it?? I just wanted to know how do I get at the motor and safely put in new brushes and oil and lube the motor?? Thanks.
Anyone have a wiring diagram for the 497 coaling station?? Still do not know how to oil and lube the motor. Any help will do. Thanks.
Can't help you there. Hope someone is familiar and will post an answer. I'm sure you are not being ignored.

Get a copy of the Greenberg's Repair + Operating Manual for Lionel Trains it has wiring diagrams for almost every Lionel product with drawings and part numbers. If you have a lot of Lionel it is a must have book.

If it is an original Post War unit, then I believe it has the "OO" Gauge Motor in it. So if you have problems, look up a "OO" unit.

The 497 has a larger 622/671 type motor with a double-wound field.
The gearbox is very simple and will not "fly apart". The grease will surely be all gummed up and should be removed as much as possible before using new.
Most of the noise is from the armature shaft run dry. Use a good synthetic oil or grease on the armature bushing and washer, and armature ends. It should quiet down nicely.

The thing is...how do I get at the motor and get new grease/lube in the motor?? Looks like a lot of work to do it. Should I unsolder any wires? Or can the motor housing be taken off without unsoldering wires?? I have the wiring diagram now. The noise is really loud. Its gotta be fixed soon. I will try it tonight I guess. Thanks.
I got it done! All lubed up and oiled. Sounds much better now!! Thanks guys.
