From what little that I can see on the admittedly rather Spartan diagram, it is not clear that you would need to remove anything other than the strling itself, cutting it off if necessary. In fact, I can't figure out how it would work at all. What is missing here?
Below is a link to a later but somewhat similar operating crane. Perhaps it will shed some light on how Lionel put things together that would be applicable in your case.

I'm needing to restring a 165 magnetic crane. In order to get to the spool, the boom needs to be removed. That way I can lift up on the spool and shaft and undo the old not. Can anyone tell me what the best way is to remove the shaft that the boom pivots on?Thanks,Nicholas Marakovits
