Is it possible to wire a vintage American Flyer accessory (#779 Barrel Loader) to a Lionel 3 rail layout?

The Lionel website has directions as to how to wire their reproduction oil drum loader to three rail track at http://www.lionel.com/media/servicedocuments/70-2300-250.pdf
I, however, prefer to wire it to transformer with a reostat that is different from the transformer supplying the track voltage , and adjust the voltage to run the loader at a realistic speed. In any case, I have seen this accessory on many Lionel layouts.
The Reproduction accessory comes with an O scale operator, who looks like one of the guys from the track gang car, while the original has a S scale guy, so you might want to swap him out.

If you use a rheostat to adjust the speed, there is no need to use another transformer; just connect the rheostat to the appropriate accessory voltage on the track transformer.

If you wire the accessory to track voltage and you have a train with a 2 position reverse unit (i.e. only runs the engine in forward and reverse with no neutral) you have to try to get barrels to load into a moving train (not so easy) or if you have a modern engine with a seuthe smoke unit, the smoke unit can burn out at the voltage necessary to run the accessory. Not everyone has these type of problems, but it is a lot easier to run your accessories off of seperate transformers than those used for track power if you have a big layout.
Tommy, I didn't propose that you operate the accessory on the track voltage. I said "connect the rheostat to the appropriate accessory voltage on the track transformer." Then you can adjust the accessory's speed with the rheostat while the train remains stopped. As long as you're using a rheostat and have a suitable accessory voltage available, I can't see why you would need another transformer, not that there's any harm in that.
