Pre war 600,601,602

I have these three cars (red) - great condition and I am looking for an engine.  Does anyone know which engine went with these cars?

I recently got a red 248 engine.. which is in very good condition and runs well.  A little wear but running perfect.  However, that is not the right engine,, coupler too low and even when I get it hooked to these cars... it really doesn't have the power to pull them too fast..

So, I am on the hunt for the right locomotive

thanks

We have a large collection of trains that we are trying to understand and eventually sell, including these 3 red cars. They are displayed behind engine 249E. I'll check and see if the two couple correctly. Might be a clue.

It depends if these were the early or later version of the 600 series passenger cars, one version may have latch and hook(late 1920' to early 30's), while the other has box and pin(around 1938 and newer) couplers.

The 249E that I have is with a freight set, but it was also sold with a passenger set.

The newer 249 for 1958 is more like the 235 scout engine from 1960, it don't look like the 249E.

The #600, 601, and 602 pre-date the remote control couplers introduced in the 1938 catalog when the cars became #2600, 2601, and 2602.

The manual coupler 600 series in Red appeared in 1936 and 1837 catalogs.

In 1936 it was introduced with the #238E "Penn. Torpedo" 4-4-2 locomotive.    In 1937 the Torpedo set #298W continued.  Two other sets contained the three cars, they were set #263E (or W) pulled by a 249E locomotive and set 233E (or W) pulled by a 265E "Commodore Vanderbilt".   All locomotives in each set were black.

As a Collector, I love my Catalogs.
