Yes.

Congrats on your 248. It's a wonderful engine. I use LaBelle oil with a long 'needle' extension that lets me lube the axles.

My 248 engine runs pretty good.. The seller did not say that it worked so I was very happy to get it running. The engine area needs a good cleaning and might be above my level of expertise.. but who knows, maybe I will get a book and try to clean it up.. Everything looks good, the gears, the wheels, the body.
I got it to pull a set of cars, 600,601,602 but it really is not the correct match.. coupler is too low and i think the cars are too big for this small engine.... I added another post to see if anyone knows the correct locomotive for the 600,601,602 cars which are red and great condition.
For this 248, do you recommend an operations book that would help me clean / restore things? I need a very detail diagram so I don't screw things up...
thanks

Is vaseline a bad idea to use to lube gears?
I have a 248 that I restored and they are a great little engine. No e-unit so no reverse. I think you will find lots of recommendations on grease. I use some aircraft grease that i purchased surplus and it works pretty good but I don't have a clue where to get it.
Somewhere I remember someone recommending some Royal Purple sticky grease that could be purchased from an automotive store. The recommendation was the grease stayed on the gears much better. I was always told to oil the bearing and grease the gears.
My 248 had a broken center gear and delaminated wheels when I purchased it. I installed new steel gears and new wheels. I fixed some trim and repainted and it looks really good (personal opinion only)
Good luck.
Just got this 248 ,,, and it works but may need a little cleaning, lube etc
Two questions since I am new to trains...
1 Does this engine run in reverse,, there is no 'e' switch
2. I have oil from the hobby store,,but for gears, should i use grease? And is there any special kind? Can I get at hardware store..
