Need some help from friends
Posted by proactive on Monday, January 24, 2011 7:24 PM

Hi,  I have an extensive Post-War collection.  I recently put together a new layout and used GarGraves track and switches.  I decided to go GarGraves to get a little realism.  However, I since learned that the GarGraves switches do not work correctly with the shoes on my Post-War cars.  I am creating small pieces of wood and modifing the switches slightly to work correctly.  I thought of doing this rather than modifing my cars because I have so many and some are in mint condition and I do not want them modified.

Any ideas?

Thanks

M,

Great layout, nice benchwork and interesting track plan.

Sorry I cannot help you with your track issues.

Not sure if this will help, but have you tried using Ross Custom switches with your GarGraves track? Ross wil mate right up to GarGraves track, no special pins needed.

not know in from experience but from others stating that gar graves switches you have to get them just right to throw right basically they have to be flat on your surface not saying they cant go up a grade but you need support that is flat under them so they lay flat.

I've been told befor that gar graves track is great but go with Ross for the switches. Which i believe is going to be my route. So i can see that my layout is going to be a slow process as there switches are more but there better and you get what you pay for I guess lol. Wish you luck on finding a good solution to your problem

This is what I did in case others are in need.  There are rails in the switches that the shoes catch on.  I felt modifying my cars was not an option.  I just bent the rails downward so that the shoes rolled right up on the rails.  I have 10 switches and it took maybe 1/2 hour with a small happer and center punch.
