They're not 2023s but (badly) repainted Erie 2032s. Coincidentally, there's an article about them in the current CTT.

Those are home-made jobbies, and not very well done either. The "Hydra-Cushion" and "Hy-Cube" logos are from boxcars.
The cab numbers are not part of a Lionel series.
Post War Lionel MIGHT have made something like this as a prototype (cheap decals) but would most likely have numbered them "0000".

Here are some pictures. They are No. 2023 engines. Any suggestions on whether these were painted by Lionel or someone else? They almost seem too good to be a custom paint job.

WarburtonThey DID make a set in the mid-1970s (A-B-A), as a matter of fact...

Lionel did NOT make Southern Pacific ALcos in the "postwar period" (1945-1969). They DID make a set in the mid-1970s (A-B-A), as a matter of fact. Check www.grzyboskitrains.com -- I believe they have a set for sale and photo of it on-line.
You might have a set of custom repaint job that someone did.

Do you have any more information - color, A-A or A-B, approximate year? Lionel made Union Pacific & Missouri Pacific Alcos in the postwar period, but no SP.
I don't recall any either. Can you give us the numbers?

I don't know any postwar SP Alcos; but Lionel made the 8552-8553-8554 set (powered A, dummy B, dummy A) in 1975.
I am having trouble finding information on a set of Postwar Lionel Southern Pacific Alco engines. Has anyone seen these before? They may have come with one of the space and military sets. Thanks.
