Operating Bachman diesels together
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, July 10, 2004 10:06 PM
I own a Bachman Diesel (F7 I believe) #307. I was recently given another identical Diesel, same manufacturer and number. Can I operate them together as a AA unit?

I think you're on the wrong forum. Bachman doesn't make O gauge. Try the Model Railroader forum for the smaller scales.

The engines you are refering to are HO scale, in which case M. Donaldson is right about the Model Railroader forums being a much better place to post this question. But, I have HO trains myself and do own Bachmann F9 diesels and can say that yes, they will operate together just fine.

Even though this is the O gauge forum, I will try to answer
your question. If you want to operate the pair of engines as
a back-to-back set, then you must take one of them and
reverse/swap the wheel-to-motor wires so that one engine
will normally operate in reverse/opposite to the other. Then
you can run them together without any trouble. If you are
not that comfortable with soldering in small spaces, take
the engine you want to operate in reverse to the other to a
hobby shop and usually they will make the alteration for a
small fee.

Hope this is helpful.

I don't think so, Paul. Just turning a two-rail locomotive around swaps the connection between the track and the motor. Two properly-wired conventional HO locomotives will run in the same direction regardless of which way they are placed on the track. (The positive rail is on the right-hand side in the direction of motion.) Don't turn on the soldering iron, Bill.

Bob;

Thanks. I am not all that familiar with HO gear. I assumed (wrong) that
reversing the wiring would reverse the polarity. Thinking about your
reply, it makes sense. Glad it got caught before an uneeded repair was
made.
