Would it hurt the value of the 390E to replace the linkage set with brand new linkage? Or should I try and salvage the originals and just get rid of the rust somehow? The BAL motor has 2 motor mount levers on each side of it. If I turn these, will the motor drop down and I will be able to fix it? And if I remove the pickup plate, will I be able to remove the wheels and axles, will they drop out as well? How do you replace the brushes and springs on a BAL motor? Thanks and any help will do.
I have a Lionel Standard Gauge 390E that has some rust on its Trailing and pilot wheels and side rods or connecting rods. How should I remove this rust?? I just got the loco and tender from a friend that wanted me to have it. I am trying to bring it back to life. The tender's trucks are rusted as well. Its a 390T tender with orange stripe. The 390E is in nice shape and is complete, except for the rust which is on the outsides of the wheels on the trailing and pilot trucks. No rust anywhere else though. The paint is nice and trim is complete. I put it on the track and applied power to it with my Z transformer and it did not move or light up the front light. Any idea how to fix this? The tender does not have a whistle, but just needs the rust removed on the trucks to get it to glide down track. I have a dremel and other tools if needed. The 390E has a BAL motor. Any idea if there are levers by the motor to get it to change directions or anything like that?? Must have a Pendulum unit inside. Thanks.
