I was curious because I saw some pictures of the "older" resistor that seemed to lack the insulation. I think these were described as having a "sock" around them that some folks removed to improved smoke performance.

Thanks Rob. That's what I figured but I know just enough about a lot of things to be dangerous. If my local Radio Shack carries one, I'd just as soon pick it up there.

Any wire wound ceramic resistor with those specs will work.

I think the problem here is that this resistor is being used for characteristics other than its resistance.  It may be that the materials, such as the insulation, are important for its function in the smoke unit.  Or not.

My engine calls for a 30 ohm 3 watt 5% resistor for the smoke unit. Is there something special about Lionel Part #691RES3W30 or can I use any resistor with those specs. It's a $2 part and it kills me to have to pay more than double that amount on shipping. I found the epoxy/ceramic insulation on my smoke resistor  to be chipped when I inspected it. I don't know if the insulation is necessary for operation. The engine still smokes but it is inconsistent. Thanks.
