On the continuing quest to get this engine running, i think i need to bypass the reversing unit to get it to run. It just sits on the track and buzzes so i assume that is the problem. i had it apart today and cleaned everything up and put it back together. also checking all the wiring connections. and i still have the same results. does anyone have a diagram or can explain to a pure idiot how to run a bypass wire from where to where?????
I appreciate all your help!

If the loco buzzes, the circuit through the motor is complete as it is the motor that is most likely buzzing. I don't know the Marx reversing unit. It is possible it is making the buzz. In any event, if the motor is buzzing, it may be that the motor bearings are worn enough that the armature is touching the stator. This will make a lot of buzzing, and the motor won't turn. You can test this by trying to push the loco with the power on. If the loco pushes easily, then the problem is most likely that the motor is not getting power. Check all the wiring to make sure none of the wires are broken. You diagnosis may be correct that the reversing unit is not working. To bypass the reversing unit, you can wire from the pickup to one of the brushes and from the other brush to the field coil. The other side of the field coil should go to the frame and make contact with the outside rail via the wheels.
You can test for continuity through the field coil and the armature with a transformer and two wires. Set the transformer on low voltage and touch the wires to the two brushes. If you get a spark, you have continuity through the armature. If no spark, you have discovered where your problem is. Ditto the field coil and the continuity from the pickup to wherever it goes and the other circuits inside the loco.

Thank you for the advise. Do you need to cut the exsisting wires to the reverse unit? or doesn't it matter?
Yes, you would need to remove the wires from the reverse unit. Otherwise you may create a smoke generator or ruin the reverse unit.
